Best: Kirkland’s from Costco! For real. They are our absolute favorite, so cost effective and such good quality, so a total win.
Before Kai was born I was set on using Honest Company diapers. They are so cute and so thick, but they gave Kai such a bad rash. We also tried Seventh Generation and Pampers Pure and weren’t impressed.
Best: Babyganics! These are by far our favorite and are similar to Water Wipes, just a tad thicker. They are also a cheaper option compared to others that we’ve tried. We order them in bulk from Amazon or get them from Target if they’re on Cartwheel.
Again, we tried Honest Company wipes and Kai didn’t react well to those either. We tried Seventh Generation and in my opinion they are too thick. Water Wipes were our go-to for a while because of how natural they are, but they are not easy to pull out of the package; they come out folded and that’s not ideal when you have a baby who is trying to touch his poop and you’re trying to get a wipe, hold his feet, keep his hands away, and not make a mess. Real life. (ha!)
Best: Triple Paste
With all of Kai’s infant allergies, trying to find diapers/wipes that work, and transitioning to solids, we dealt with a lot of rashes. Up until a couple months ago we used the Honest Company Diaper Cream and surprisingly that worked for us. Kai got a really bad rash recently and the Honest Co cream didn’t seem to do the trick anymore, so we tried Triple Paste and it’s magic. His rash was completely gone the next morning.
Best: Baby Dove
Best splurge: Tubby Todd
Honestly, we’ve loved all of the wash + shampoo that we’ve tried. We have used Johnson’s, Honest Company, Baby Dove (sensitive skin + regular), and Tubby Todd. They are all great. Gauge would tell you his favorite is Johnson’s because of the smell. 😉
Best: Baby Dove
Just like with the body wash/shampoo, we’ve loved the lotions we’ve tried too. Honest Company, Baby Dove, Baby Aveeno, and Johnson’s. I love the calming smell of the Honest Company dreamy lavender lotion, but the Baby Dove goes on so smooth and isn’t too thick or sticky.
I planned to exclusively breastfeed (my goal was 6 months or longer), but with Kai’s allergies we had to stop at about 2 months (I share a little bit of our story here). Before Kai was born I researched bottles and because I planned to breastfeed, we purchased Como Tomo bottles and Dr. Brown’s glass bottles. Kai didn’t do as well as I had hoped with the Como Tomo bottles, but did well with the Dr. Brown’s until I stopped breastfeeding. I was on the hunt for new bottles that were good for reflux and the next brand we tried was MAM; they are the best! We bought a set of 4oz. and two sets of 9oz. bottles and when it was time to adjust the flow, we just replaced the nipples instead of having to replace the entire set. I bought our first set of 5oz. bottles at Target, then ordered the 9oz. sets on Amazon.
Best: MAM — Amazon seems to have the best variety, but we have also gotten them at Target. We’ve used all of the sizes so far.
I purchased two WubbaNub’s before Kai was born and when he stayed in the NICU, they gave him a Philips Avent Soothie that he used, but he didn’t love them. They are sort of an odd shape, especially for breastfed babies, at least that was our experience. So, we are saving the Wubs for the next baby because they are too cute.
Best: Wink Naturals
I was so hesitant to try teething gel, but a sweet friend of mine gave me one to try. It’s all natural and worked wonders and I probably won’t try anything else. We also use Tylenol a couple of times a week as needed and Kai loves his Sophie and bacon teether.
I am really picky when it comes to baby clothes. I am not a fan of the “baby baby” clothes that most stores carry. I always wanted my kids to have a fun style, even as babies and even if it meant spending a little bit more money. I’ve found a few shops that are our go-to and pretty much contribute to Kai’s entire wardrobe.
Favorite online shops:
Trilogy Design Co. — our favorite shop for tees! They have different collections that are so fun and reasonably priced.
Little Bipsy Collection — our absolute favorite for joggers, shoes, and tees. They are a little pricy but worth every penny. Such great quality and they just released the cutest mama+me jogger sets!
Pink Blush — I ordered a few things from Pink Blush when I was pregnant and a couple things for Kai from their baby collection. I’ve gotten Kai jammies, onesies, and a couple of tees from here that we love.
Spearmint Baby — I originally fell in love with this shop because of their accessories, and now because of their clothes. Again, a little pricy, but such good quality, so in my opinion totally worth they money.
Favorite stores: H&M, Old Navy, Target
H&M tends to be hit or miss for me, depending on the store we’re in. We’ve been to two H&M stores here in Hawaii and one has great stock in baby clothes, while the other one, not so much. We’ve snagged a few tees from here and I can’t wait to try their pants once we live in a cooler climate.
Kai owns every single pair of joggers from Old Navy and I love them for wearing around the house or running quick errands, but they ride up really easily, so the majority of the time he looks like he’s wearing capris or bermuda shorts. His plush pajamas and his “dad shorts” from Old Navy are some of our favorites. This is also where we got his entire cold weather wardrobe when we visited AZ last fall; so cute and didn’t break the bank. I only shop here when they have sales or on the website when they offer 20-50% off.
I did so much research when I was creating our registry, but also learned a lot once Kai was born. There were things I thought we would need/use that we ended up not using or not loving, and then there were things that I didn’t think we’d need/use that we ended up purchasing. Most of these items are splurges, but 1000% worth it. We have used all of these since the day we brought Kai home from the hospital.
4moms Playard — this is the newer version, not the exact one we have. It was well worth the extra money to have a playard that is so easy to use, easy to store, and that has a removable bassinet. Kai slept in the bassinet in our room for a little over two months.
Dock A Tot — pricey, but worth every penny. Kai slept in his until we moved him into his crib. I put it on the couch if he was napping and I was downstairs and it fit perfectly in the playard bassinet that he slept in his first couple months.
Ollie Swaddle — i’ve mentioned these so many times, but they are a necessity in my opinion. Our first Ollie Swaddle was a gift from a sweet friend and she got us hooked, so we bought a second one. We have the gray and the light blue color; they are so easy to use, wash, and they dry quick.
Sound Machine — there are so many sound machines out there, but this one is cheap and has six different natural sounds to choose from.
Slumberkins — the sweetest company with such an awesome mission. I got Kai a Slumber Sloth and he slept with it every night. Unfortunately it got lost at the last hotel we stayed at and hasn’t been restocked, so he currently has the hammerhead and loves it just as much.
Pro tip: we added diapers and wipes to our registry and it wasn’t until just a couple months ago that we actually had to buy diapers. We went about 6 months without having to buy any diapers + wipes!
